: Acid scarification for 30-90 minutes prior to planting. Scarification with concentrated sulfuric acid for 30 minutes is typically enough time to remove the hard seed coat but experiments using acid for as long as 120 minutes also produced good, if not the best results. Bottom line, you are not going to harm the seeds if you soak them for a little longer in the sulfuric acid. Nicking the seed will produce the same results.
A large broadleaf evergreen shrub or small tree (8-20’ tall and 8-20’ wide) native to the South and Southwestern U.S. hardy to zone 7-10 (0 degrees. Produces drooping clusters of purple flowers reminiscent of wisteria in appearance with a sweet grape fragrance. Very drought and heat tolerant. Makes for a nice potted plant brought indoors when temperatures dip below the single digits when grown outside its hardiness range. Bright red seeds can be used in crafts. This species, Texas mountain laurel, has gone through a number of scientific name changes—previously syn.
Sophora
and
Calia secundiflora
—with the current accepted Latin name of
Dermatophyllum secundiflora
.
