Texas kidneywood is and evergreen shrub which varies from 2-8 feet in height and spread. With a very long blooming period—intermittently from April to November with most flowers in late August—the extremely fragrant white flowers, and later seeds are valuable for insects and birds. Leaves have a distinct tangerine scent when crushed.
Native to dry calcareous soils and rocky limestone hills of south Texas and Mexico. In the landscape Texas kidneywood is adaptable. Typically, the lower branches are removed to reveal the attractive bark and allow for underplanting with equally attractive groundcovers which compliment the rugged yet beautiful architecture of this shrub. Can be pruned into a small tree and in this manner can be also very attractive in a container—grown thus can be grown in colder zones and brought into a garage or other protected space to overwinter
    .
Texas kidneywood resembles the other native kidneywood (Eysenhardtia orthocarpa) but is a smaller, more delicate version with sweetly fragrant blooms that provide nectar for bees and butterflies.
