Very similar to the more common snow-on-the-mountain (
Euphorbia marginata
) snow-on-the-prairie differs in having graceful, narrow bracts and soft, hairy stems, leaves, and bracts. We feel that the narrow bracts produce a more graceful, enchanting appearance as opposed to the wide spoon-shaped bracts of
Euphorbia marginata
. Unlike the hefty bracts of
E. marginata
, the narrow bracts flutter with the slightest breeze. When large colonies are in full bloom from a distance these plants truly look like snow on the prairie.
This is a plant found in disturbed landscapes, hence they are most often found in grazed lands. Easy to grow as a result in just about any soils so long as they have full sun and are not too wet. Though usually seen in their natural habitat as somewhat thin and sometimes smaller plants, in a garden setting, or with adequate moisture, they form full plants. When in bloom the bi-colored white and green bracts stand out from a great distance.
Whereas
E. marginata
is found throughout the country,
E. bicolor
is e
ndemic to only Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. But being an annual can be be grown over a much wider range. We suspect it will not bloom in the northern states because of the shorter growing season.
One of our lesser know species in the garden trade.
Note
: If you order more than one lot of one species of seeds, for example, you place two orders of 100 seeds we assume you want 200 seeds and your order will be sent in one seed packet.
