One of our charming often over-looked woodland plants. But this plant is by no means delicate or difficult to grow. Tolerant of deep shade and able to grow in all other light conditions but full sun in hotter climates making it a great addition to especially deep-shade areas of the garden. Extremely drought tolerant, a typical condition of deep shade areas. Tough as nails it will go dormant during the most extreme drought rather than wilt and die. A woodland superstar!
    Pigeonberry
typically grows to 18" tall and wide but in frost-free areas may reach 48". It can be cut back at anytime to maintain height and rejuvenate if need be. Very easy to germinate but then does take its time—transplants are ready in about 2-3 months. Best to grow to a sizable plant—3-4"—before transplanting to the garden. Once started this is one of the most carefree plants of the garden or woodland.
    Unusual for most plants
    pigeonberry
blooms nearly all year long when temperatures are above frost as well as producing fruit and flowers at the same time! It's flowers, which are white
    or pink
, have a calming cottage garden feel and are reminiscent of the foamflowers (
    Tiarella
). Its bright, vibrant red berries contrast with its deep green leaves and are eye catching.
A must-have plant for deep shade. Great for areas such as dry, hard-to-grown areas under trees. Great also in woodland gardens and mixed plantings. Also grows well as a container plant—unusual for a woodland flower.
Unusual for most woodland perennials pigeon berry blooms the first year from seed and can be grown as an annual.
