    Description

This is for an original program from the AAA sanctioned World Record Speed Trials held on the beach in Daytona Beach Florida. The trials would be held from March 15 through March 30 and were part of the origins of what would later be known as “Speed Weeks”. The book is actually in nice condition for its age. It has oversized covers while the inside consists of 32 pages of history, advertising, photos, traffic instructions and how the event is to be handled. The trials would only last another 5 years, ending in 1935 when they would be moved to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to avoid the ruts and danger the Daytona sands were inflicting. The time trials leaving for Utah was probably the best thing to happen to Daytona since they replaced it in 1936 with an oval road race that would take place on both the legendary ocean front paved A1A and the infamous beach where the speed trials had been run since 1903. In 1959 Daytona would construct its own track and begin racing 500 lap contests and the rest as they say is history. The cover has two areas lightly stamped with “This Book is Compliments of Thames Service Station 505 Main Street Daytona Beach Florida”. The centerfold has only just recently come loose of the book but everything else is nice and tight. To put the speeds in perspective, Henry Segrave would set the world record on the beach in 1929 by driving his Golden Arrow 231.45 MPH. Not sure what would happen in 1930 but 1931 through 1935 would be called the Malcolm Campbell era. An impossible book to find and the centerpiece of any racing collection.
