This electrifying native annual looks like a thistle but is in the parsley family a completely different family from thistles which is the aster family.
Though the light blue foliage is a nice contract to any companion plant—and is most dramatic combined with large smooth-leaved plants and dark-leaved ones—
Leavenworth eryngo
is most striking when in bloom. Leavenworth eryngo's flower is invariably described as a small purple pineapple as indeed the comparison is well-deserved.
Leavenworth eryngo is in
the same genus as the more common European sea holly but its luminescent purple flowers glow and are a standout in comparison to its more dull European counterparts. The blooms start out green in late summer and by September turn bright purple.
Leavenworth eryngo is a tough plant tolerating extreme drought and heat, rocky limestone soils, and utter neglect...but also thrives in the typical garden setting. An scrappy though elegant plant for any situation. One of the best flowers for dried arrangements.
Note
: If you order more than one lot of one species of seeds, for example you place two orders of 100 seeds, or whatever variation is offered, we assume you want 200 seeds and your order will be sent in one seed packet.
