Hog peanut is a native twinging vine which slowly ambles over nearby supports over the summer months, typically to a heigh of 36” though it can climb up to 8’. It’s pea-like flowers hang in cluster of 2-15 flowers. Flowers are a light pink, pale lavender, and occasionally white. Its trifoliate leaves are soft and thin with a pleasant light green color.
Interestingly, hog peanut also produces self-fertile flowers on low stolons along the ground. These flowers lack petals and produce a single-seeded fleshy fruit, sometimes becoming subterranean. For this reason, hog peanut may have the appearance of being a perennial though it may indeed occasionally act as a perennial. The underground fruits are edible and can be eaten raw or boiled to remove the hulls and eaten like a nut—for this reason hog peanut has been used in permaculture as a small-scale native edible. Native Americans used this nut as a minor food source. The seeds produced by the traditional flowers—the seeds we offer—can be used as one would lentils and are a good source of protein when cooked.
Hog peanut fixes atmospheric nitrogen thereby enriching the soil.
A pleasant vine which can be used to fill empty spaces, scrambling along the ground or over a small support
