Frost grape is one of our native woody edible grapes climbing up fences, shrubs, trees by tendrils or sprawling along the ground. The coarsely toothed (dentate) leaves lack what we often think of as the characteristic lobes of grape leaves—the wine grape—are somewhat shiny and can turn the typical bright to dark red fall color.
The late spring to early summer panicles of flowers have a strongly sweet fragrance. The 1-6” long fruit clusters which follow begin green and turn to a dark blue-violet, maturing in autumn and becoming sweeter after a light frost, hence one of its common names—frost grape. Fruit is quite acid when ripe and best used after it becomes sweet.
Besides being used by humans frost grape and the other native grapes have a high wildlife value, flowers providing nectar and pollen, and fruit being important to a wide-selection of birds and mammals and even the Eastern box turtle. Leaves are also edible and have a pleasant flavor when cooked, usually used as a wrap, but can be eaten raw or dried for later use.
