A useful and attractive native groundcover which blooms in late summer to early fall pretty clusters of lavender-blushed white flowers. It is mostly grown in the garden for its charming, large, basal (lower) leaves from which its name—elephant’s foot—is derived. A lesser-known native plant—though actually common in its natural setting—for the informal woodland setting. Especially when planted as a group, elephant’s foot forms a pleasant groundcover. Elephant’s foot can also be quite effective when grown in a large container by itself or mixed with other plants.
Native to Midwest and southeastern stream banks, open woods, along shaded trails and paths, and other moist, well-drained meadows and woodlands.
Interestingly, though in the aster family, this member does not have ray flowers—ray flowers are the large outer
petals
of common sunflowers, for instance. Listed as endangered in New Jersey and Pennsylvania though frequent in other states.
Note
: If you order more than one lot of one species of seeds, for example you place two orders of 100 seeds, or whatever variation is offered, we assume you want 200 seeds and your order will be sent in one seed packet.
Additionally, the seeds (achenes) we sell of this species have been cleaned of their pappus bristles and covering, though a few seeds may have remnants of the seed covering, which is used by this species to aid in dispersal. Cleaned or not this does not affect the quality or germination rate of the seeds and is done for your ease of handling.
