Dwarf passionflower is one of our hardiest native passionflowers along with maypop (
    Passiflora incarnata
) which we also offer for sale. It is most often found growing in open woodlands climbing any plant or object or growing as a groundcover, which is a quite lovely display of its appealing blue-green leaves. In fact, it does grow in quite dense shade making it a plant that can be used in almost any garden situation. Best flowering and fruiting is in full sun. Like most passionflower species dwarf passionflower prefers its roots zone to be shaded or mulched to remain cool protecting its fleshy rhizome.
The flowers a quite outstanding, as a pale yellow with the characteristic passionflower structure. And unique being only a little over one inch across. Flowers are on long stems and best enjoyed when dwarf passionflower is climbing. However, this plant can be grown just for its foliage which forms a solid, soft cover. Best used in the shade for this effect and would be a welcome addition under the dense shade of a tree where one cannot grow grass.
Since the vines are delicate this is never an invasive vine and can easily be pruned to any length with a simple twist of the wrist— its diminutive size mirrors its gentle nature and restrained growth. In fact, dwarf passionflower is happy grown in a container, it being a most versatile plant.
Though the fruit is edible we have found it to have no taste and is best left on the vine to appreciate. Passionflowers are host to the Gulf fritillary caterpillar (
    Agraulis vanillae incarnata
) whose only food source is passionflower leaves (See product image for images of this caterpillar and butterfly). We have seen many such caterpillars on this plant to no visible detriment.
A most-valuable vine for the garden and wildlife while being resistant to deer damage.
