Greenish yellow flowers last for two to three weeks. Forming colonies under good conditions, the palmate, coarsely toothed leaves make this plan an attractive groundcover under trees and other tough dry or wet shaded areas. A tough plant tolerant of sunny places as well.
Found in woodlands, paths, fence rows, etc. common black snake root is extremely tolerant of tough conditions. Widely distributed from Canada west to Minnesota and south to Texas and northern Florida.
Though adaptable to degraded woods and other such places, common black snakeroot is listed as threatened or endangered in several Northeastern states including Massachusetts, New Hampshire where this species is being overtaken by invasive non-native species and threatened by other environmental threats—though common to other states where it is not under threat.
