Why is this dalea not planted more often! Black dalea prefers full sun and poor, well-drained soils, resenting fertilizers or overwatering—a great lower-maintenance plant. Native to dry limestone from Oklahoma to Texas black dalea does especially well in rocky limestone where few other plants will grow.
When not in bloom the fine foliage gives black dalea a plesant appearance. But black dalea’s non-descript appearance belies the late summer into fall show when the purple pea-like flowers cover the plant. Blooming only a few flowers at a time on each flower head the showy flowers really stand out.
Black dalea is useful for erosion control and we have seen plants growing on hard, rocky limestone slopes, a testament to this native’s tenacity. This dalea takes well to pruning and can benefit from a hard late-winter pruning to keep its characteristic dense, mounded shape.
