Hariy (yellow) leafcup, or bear's foot, is a perennial flower in the sunflower family native to the eastern and central US but is becoming rare in some states—it is listed as endangered in New York and New Jersey, and threatened in Michigan, where it has legal protection.
hairy leafcup is native to open woods,
woodland edges, meadows, thickets, and along shaded streams. It gets its name—
hairy leafcup—from the
large leaves (4-12") that cup the stem, and bear's foot from the shape of the large leaf. From mid-summer to early autumn, it produces numerous clusters of yellow flower heads that attract a variety of types of pollinators—large plant will produce around 100 flower heads. The bright, yellow flowers stand out well against the dark, green, uniquely-shaped leaves, especially in the dappled shade of a large tree or open woodland.
Best grown in well-drained soil types in part-sun to partial shade. This is a tall perennial and can reach 10 feet though more commonly 5-7'. Because of its size it is best in the back of the boarder or used as naturalizing in a woodland or meadow setting. Hairy leafcup is truly impressive when grown along a fence. Quite adaptable and does not spread aggressively.
Because of its hollow stems it is best to not cut the plant down for winter since native bees over-winter in the hollow stems.
A lesser know native perennial with unique leaves that will have people asking you, "What plant is that!"
