Antelopehorn milkweed (spider milkweed) is so named because its seed pods curve upward resembling an antelope’s horn. Found in grasslands from dry, gravelly soils, to heavy clays, this southern milkweed, along with green milkweed (
    Asclepias viridis
), are two of the most widespread and valued milkweeds for the monarch butterflies’ northward spring migration, especially through Texas.
The flowers of antelopehorn, along with green milkweed, are one of the most architectural in the milkweed genus (
    Asclepias
). The flower’s corollas do not reflex backwards as do most other species in the milkweed genus but instead surround the hoods. If one looks closely the hoods of the predominately green flowers have a maroon tinge. The flowers heads are large—3-4 inches across, the size of baseballs. The lanceolate leaves give this milkweed an elegant appearance, unlike the broader leaves which some feel give other milkweeds a weedy appearance…we find that all the milkweeds can be appreciated for their beauty in the garden when arranged well in the garden.
Pollinators frequent antelopehorn milkweed and all the native milkweeds. The leaves are an important food for several butterfly caterpillars. We have never seen an individual milkweed plant so damaged as to be unsightly—in fact, it is unusual to even know a caterpillar is feeding until one notices the chrysalis!
Why not try one of our less know, though actually common, native southern milkweeds?
We also offer another milkweed species
    Asclepias viridis
    (www.ebay.com/itm/144541961622).
    Note
: If you order more than one lot of one species of seeds, for example, you place two orders of 100 seeds we assume you want 200 seeds and your order will be sent in one seed packet.
