    Product description
    :
    These popular, versatile flowers suitable for flower beds, borders, rockeries, terraces, balconies and vases can be grown even by novice growers. They bloom for a very long time, do not make high demands, are resistant to heat, drought, diseases, pests, tolerate transplanting. In addition, plants scare away rodents, moles, nematodes from the soil, so they are often planted on vegetable beds with potatoes, in flower beds – next to roses, tulips.
    Marigolds (Latin Tagetes) as a botanical genus were described in 1753 by Charles Linnaeus himself. Tagetes is an annual plant belonging to the family of compound flowers. In its wild form, it covers the continents of America in the zone of tropical and moderately warm climate. These flowers from North and South America were in demand long before growing in our gardens – they were considered sacred by the Aztecs. The source of the admiration of the ancient society was primarily their longevity.
    Flowers have other names:
    in the Latin manner – tagetis;
    The English name – "Marigold" – translates as Mary's gold.
    The Aztecs actively cultivated marigolds, using them for rituals and healing – treated hiccups and lightning strikes! The Spaniards, who colonized South America, immediately became interested in flowers – so their seeds got to Europe in the 16th century, and then to North Africa and Asia.
    Today, wild specimens usually cover the shores of ponds and rivers, wetlands, swamps and deciduous forests. In Europe, marigolds are grown in gardens mainly as annual plants, although in warmer climates they grow as perennials. Currently, more than 50 confirmed species of marigolds have been found, varying in color – from cream to orange and red, and height. The lowest grades reach a height of several centimeters; the highest – more than 2 meters!
    Instructions for planting and care:
    Tagetes is unpretentious, grows and blooms in almost any conditions, but with good care the bushes look much more decorative. It is grown in two ways – by seedling and sowing seeds in the ground.
    Marigolds are grown by sowing seeds in the ground at different times:
    Under winter, after the onset of a steady minus. In advance, ridges are formed, grooves are made and some earth is stored in a warm place. The seeds are sown in dry ground and sprinkled with stored soil. The top is mulched with rotted sawdust, compost, leaf litter. In the spring, when the last frosts have passed, the mulch is raked so that the soil warms up faster.
    In spring, in mid–April - early May, marigolds are sown on insulated ridges or greenhouses. After sowing, the grooves are spilled with warm water.
    In early – mid-May, tagetes are sown directly into the ground for a permanent place. The shoots that have appeared are thinned out, leaving at least 10 cm between the plants. When several real leaves appear on the seedlings, they are planted at a distance of 30-40 cm.
    How to grow marigold seedlings in a greenhouse
    Marigolds from seeds are successfully grown in a greenhouse. The landing dates come when forecasters no longer promise a decrease in night temperatures below -1 -3 ° C. The soil in the greenhouse thaws quickly already in the first warm April days.
    To prevent the sprouted seedlings from being caught by the night frost, use a covering material. You can also put containers with water in the greenhouse. During the day, it heats up and gradually gives off heat at night, maintaining a temperature several degrees higher than outside.
    Shoots appear in a week. Care for seedlings of marigolds consists in regular watering with warm water, loosening and weeding. If the soil has been prepared in advance, young plants do not need separate fertilizing. If necessary (weak growth, yellowing of leaves), foliar spraying with 1-3% urea solution is carried out.
    How to grow marigold seedlings at home
    The most reliable way to get flowering plants early is to plant marigolds on seedlings. Like the main seedling crops – peppers and eggplants, they are sown at the end of February – in March. More precise dates depend on the climate and the region of residence.
    The soil for sowing marigolds is prepared in such proportions:
    1 piece of compost;
    1 piece of peat;
    1 piece of garden land;
    0.5 parts of sand.
    A drainage layer is poured on the bottom of the tank – broken bricks, expanded clay, coarse sand. Then — the prepared soil mixture. It is slightly compacted and watered. A preparation for fungal diseases can be added to the water for irrigation, since tagetes seedlings often suffer from a black leg. After a few days, when the earth settles and is evenly saturated with moisture, grooves are made and marigold seeds are laid out in them.
    Sprinkle with earth on top and moisten a little more. The pots are covered with glass or film and put in a warm, bright place. The coating is regularly removed for ventilation. After the first shoots appear, the film is removed and the containers are moved to a sunny place. Until the seedlings have the first real leaves, they are watered very moderately to prevent the disease of the black leg.
    Caring for seedlings at home is no different from the agricultural technique of growing seedlings in the open ground: timely watering, fertilizing and good lighting will allow you to get the first flowers of marigolds in June.
    Planting seedlings in the open ground
    The optimal distance between plants when planting seedlings of marigolds in the open ground is 0.4–0.5 m for erect varieties. Stunted ones can be planted a little more often. The place should be sunny, without stagnant air.
    The plants are transplanted together with a lump of earth. Before planting, the marigolds should be watered so that the roots do not dry out during transplantation. It is advisable to prepare a place for a future flower bed in the fall – to add phosphorus-potassium fertilizers, ash and dig it up. When planting seedlings in the ground, compost, carbamide or saltpeter is added under each root. But you should not be zealous with nitrogen, so that the plants do not get fat, that is, they do not increase the green mass to the detriment of flowering. Spraying with a solution of micronutrients for flowers will bring great benefit to the marigolds. They do this after the plants have taken root, started to grow and began to gain buds.
    Tagetes care in the open ground
    Marigolds are moisture-loving, but they do not like long-term stagnation of water. Therefore, watering should be moderate. After watering, the ground must be loosened. For abundant flowering, flowers are fed several times a season with an infusion of mullein or liquid fertilizer from nettles and other weeds.
    To maintain a high decorative effect, faded inflorescences are cut off. Thickened places are easily discharged by pruning, using cut flowers for bouquets.
