One packet of more than 50 seedsRaising hybrid
Streptocarpus (Cape Primrose)
from seed is a great indoor project for gardeners and plant lovers.
This is our 2021-22 offering of seeds from the named hybrid Streptocarpus cultivar Cherry Roulette* (first and second pictures). These seeds were produced, via hand-pollination, with pollen from a greater number and variety of other named cultivars than our previous offerings. The pollen parents include (pictured in this order) Drako, Gina, Kalahari, Hebe, Wow, Lolita, Harlequin Lace, Harlequin Damsel, Harlequin Ruby, as well as (not pictured) Listy, Full Moon, Keigetsu, Leyla, and others. Some self-pollination may also have occurred. Other photos of these cultivars can be found elsewhere online.
*We received this plant as Cherry Roulette. It appears to be the plant more commonly known as Roulette Cherry, or if not then one very similar to it.
These seeds were produced in spring and summer 2021 and collected at the end of the year. Stored cool and dry, they will remain viable for two years or longer.
Seeds from other named cultivars are available. Our new listings are posted on ebay.ca. If you cannot see them from your country's ebay site, send us a message and we will send you links to the listings.
Plants raised from these seeds will not be identical to the parent(s). Some will resemble one or both of the parents in colour, form, size, and/or markings, and some may not closely resemble either parent. Expect to be surprised and delighted. We have posted pictures of some plants we grew from these seeds on the blog, Primrose Fields: Scenes from a Garden in Edmonton, Canada. Look in the category "Streptocarpus Propagation."|
Seeds begin to sprout around two weeks after sowing, and first flower buds can appear 4-6 months later (depending on the time of year and growing conditions). Display your potted plants outdoors in summer, in a cool, shady spot, or keep them indoors in a window or under lights. A well-tended plant at its peak, usually beginning in late spring, will cascade with blossoms for many weeks, and can go on flowering, at a lesser rate, through autumn and right up to the darkest days of winter. Streps are easy, rewarding houseplants all year round. We have them sitting in windows on every side of the house, where they flourish in bright, indirect natural light.
The seeds are very small (third picture) and can be tricky to handle, but each packet is sure to contain more than the stated number. We also provide a page of detailed instructions to get you started.
